12 Pounds. 21 Days. One Belt Loop That Lied to Me.

I needed a new belt hole yesterday morning. By 9am I was back on the old one. Here's what 21 days on tirzepatide actually looks like, water weight, food noise going quiet, and why I turned down a higher dose.

12 Pounds. 21 Days. One Belt Loop That Lied to Me.

Yesterday morning I woke up and thought I was making real progress. Jumped out of bed, went to buckle my belt, and I needed a new hole. One loop tighter. I stood there in my bedroom feeling pretty good about myself.

Then I had my first coffee, got moving, went to the bathroom, and back to the old loop. Turns out I was just less inflated at 6am than I am by 9.

That’s the glamorous side of week three on tirzepatide.

The actual number, though, is good. I went to my doctor for a tetanus shot (apparently I was overdue, which tells you a lot about how on top of things I am) and while I was there they weighed me. Their scale, their records. Twelve pounds down in 21 days.

Now, I want to be honest about that. I think most of it is water and inflammation leaving my body, not fat burning off in any dramatic way. The tirzepatide slows down your digestive tract, so food stays in your system longer, and I’m just not hungry enough to reload before the last meal is even done. I’m not torching subcutaneous fat yet. But the direction is right, and that’s enough for now.

My doctor wanted to move me up to 5 milligrams. I said no.

I started at 2.5mg and I’m losing 12 pounds a month. That’s more than I was hoping for. I told her I’d be happy with eight. Four weeks, two pounds a week, that’s what reasonable looks like. And more importantly, I’ve still got levers I haven’t pulled yet. I’m not lifting heavy yet. I’m working out with dumbbells, getting my body back awake without wrecking myself. I did CrossFit for years. I’m not doing that again. I’m old. I know better.

The point is: if I still have tools I haven’t used, I don’t need more medication. I want to save that runway.

The other thing that genuinely surprised me is what I’m eating. I’m not following any complicated plan, but I’ve been using the 7minuteman AI nutrition tracker to keep an eye on things and it has been genuinely great. Simple, fast, no nonsense. By pure default I’m gravitating toward protein and vegetables because my body has started sending clearer signals, and the tracker confirms what I’m already feeling. If I eat a big plate of pasta with no protein, I get hungry later. If I eat chicken and some vegetables, I’m fine. I didn’t decide to eat this way. I just started listening to what was actually working.

The food noise, that thing where you’re watching a hockey game and you suddenly find yourself standing in front of the open fridge for no real reason, that’s gone. It’s just quiet now.

None of this is medical advice. I’m not a doctor. If you’re thinking about tirzepatide, talk to your physician, do your research, read up on it here. This is just my experience, and my experience so far is that I found a tool that works.

Why I’m Not Chasing Competition-Style Ribs on My Smoker

Before pellet smokers, grandma made ribs one of two ways, and both got you fall-off-the-bone tender. Here’s why I’m chasing that same texture on a smoker instead of the tight, sauced, one-bite standard competition barbecue rewards, and how close I got this time.
